Ol’ Dirty Week: Celebrating the life and times of ODB

Ol’ Dirty Week: Celebrating the life and times of ODB

Saturday November 13th, 2004 is a day Hip-Hop heads will never forget. I remember that day like it was yesterday. My best friend Jon and I decided to hit up Downtown Vancouver to look for new gear at Dipt and bargains at Charlie’s Records & Discs. Where we live it’s hard to find the good albums at a reasonable price. Big stores like HMV were selling the classic double discs albums for $60! While digging for albums, Jon stumbled upon a copy of the Wu-Tang Clan’s classic “Forever” for only $14! I left with a discounted 8 Mile DVD, headed back to the train, and went home to enjoy this newly found treasure. I still remember entering my room, hanging my jacket, and sitting on my desk reading the latest Hip-Hop news from allhiphop.com. I was stunned to read the latest news. Users of the Ill Community forum were paying respects to the Ol’ Dirty Bastard. I went to all the major Hip-Hop sites and watched Muchmusic (Canada’s MTV) to make sure what I was reading was not a hoax. Sadly it was true and my heart just sank. Maybe I should have seen this coming, maybe even the Hip-Hop community as a whole saw this coming, but the world just wasn’t ready for it. I paid my respects to Dirty by listening to his best songs and verses, even played a bootleg version of Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style for PS1.

When I went to school the following Monday, my friends Jon and Will were feeling just like me. We never knew Ol’ Dirty, we weren’t even of age to go to the good Hip-Hop shows yet, but we felt this strange connection with the Dirt Dog. He represented all the messed up things I wanted to do (minus the drugs). He wasn’t afraid of speaking his mind and said the things he wanted to say without caring about the consequences. He was a man who represented freedom of speech and choice to the fullest. If we could learn anything from the Ol’ Dirty Bastard, it’s live life the way you see fit, and you’ll die with no regrets. Many of the people close to him say he was happy before he passed away.

To honor a pioneer and legend in the Hip-Hop world, to honor a man with a one of a kind zest for life, Class & Grime presents to you “Ol’ Dirty Week”. From today to Saturday this week is dedicated to Big Baby Jesus. Put your blunts in the air, raise a glass, pour out a little liquor, and play your favorite Ol’ Dirty joint. Like RZA said in the June 2005 edition of XXL:

“ODB lives. Maybe Russell Jones is not here, but what he spoke on remains. The word is word and the truth is truth.”

Can I get a “SSSSUUUUUUUUUUUUU”?!? That’s the call of the Wu for you ignorant people. This is for you Dirty, Hip-Hop will always love you, and miss you a lot. It’s a celebration bitches!

Stay true,

RCV
