Phonte of Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame had this to say about the King of Pop:

I haven’t been compelled to blog in a long time.

In an era where everybody is twittering and text-messaging their lives away, a well-thought out essay that extends past 140 characters is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

But when our universe lost its brightest star on June 25, 2009, I felt a deep, overwhelming sadness that I haven’t experienced in many years and I felt moved to say….something.

My hero, Michael Joseph Jackson, is dead…

Excuses, excuses, excuses. That’s all they are. We haven’t had constent content since last month. Why are we still around when we don’t even update? I can say it might be lack of commitment from D-Smooth and I. Maybe the dudes that are supposed to be updating don’t give a fuck. Lack of funds to promote this brand right, no studio to record at, blah, blah, blah, blah. Alright right now we don’t have a whole lot going for us, but that doesn’t mean we are gonna just disappear. I got a lot of stuff going on in my personal life, all of a sudden this isn’t the most important thing for me right now. When I came up with the idea for this movement and this brand, I actually had everything going for me. I wasn’t the richest man, but I could afford to invest in what I believe in. I take pride in being able to be a PR warrior, hitting the streets, meeting the people, and doing whatever necessary to promote. I had no idea that the current economy would effect me and my family this bad.

I’m a hard working man that can talk the talk and walk the walk. But it’s a little hard to walk the walk or talk the talk without the right tools or support. D-Smooth and I have a lot of work ahead of us. Once I have my own personal life on track, I can fully focus my energy, and invest my time in this crazy idea I came up with. We ain’t going NOWHERE. Fuck what y’all say. This is a marathon, we are in it for the long haul. For people that believe, support, and still follow, we thank you. Haters we love you too, except for the ones that just hate for the sake of hating.

Can’t stop, won’t stop

50 years after God graced us with his stirring voice and undeniable dance moves, Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California.

Clichés aside, there will never be another “King Of Pop”. Nobody in the history of pop music will ever again transcend the colour boundaries, or bring together the masses through his philanthropic efforts. Even though the final two decades of his life were plagued with countless allegations of child molestation and failed comebacks, we should never forget the genius that is Michael Jackson. With that in mind, I present to you the ten songs that I feel define his career and really portrays what he meant to the world of Pop music.

Kindly note that I was not able to post the actual videos due to the fact Michael’s YouTube channel disabled embedding.

10. She’s Out Of My Life

With the song “She’s Out Of My Life”, Michael gave the world it’s first glimpse at the man beyond the superstar. His vocals here are impeccable, and near the end of the song, he breaks down and cries.

9. Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

Nothing here to marvel at but a pure Funk/RnB masterpiece. A million dollars to the next person that can actually refrain from dancing to this the next time they hear it.

8. Bad

Leather jacket? Check. Martin Scorsese as the director? Check. Weird Al Yankovic gaining instant inspiration for a parody? Check and mate.

7. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

A song that can single-handedly help you woo the affections of that special little lady. Provided that you can sing and dance to it ofcourse.

6. Beat It

Bold African-American Rock N’ Roll, a scorned vocal performance, Quincy Jones at the helm, and one killer Eddie Van Halen solo.

5. Black Or White

The song did quite well to promote equality and social justice around the world. Unfortunately, a Macaulay Culkin cameo did little to dispel his child-molestation allegations.

4. Man In The Mirror

Hands down Michael Jackson’s most critically acclaimed song. Inspiration at it’s finest.

3. Ben

A song as more comforting than a tub of ice cream and sleeping next to your plush bear combined.

2. Thriller

Nothing has ever come close to he entrancing appeal of this song and music video. Would you believe that the director, John Landis’, challenge at the time was to make Michael look “scary”?

1. Billie Jean

What more can be written about this song the has not been written before? Well for starters, it has the distinct honour of being the first music video played on MTV by an African-American. For the cherry on top, Michael performed the “moonwalk” to this song on Motown’s 25th Anniversary. The world was never the same after that.

Their first album “Sick Like That” was met with critical acclaim and the follow up “The Remedy” is due very soon. Ess has hooked me up with their latest single “Sentimental” featuring long time collaborator Amanda Silvera. You can download their lastest song from the link below. I would consider my self a movie buff, I’m always hitting up the theater to watch the newest flick or watching a classic movie at home. Because of this, I have grown to appreciate what a truly great scene looks like, but that is not what this article is about. Instead this will showcase 5 of the most terrible scenes I have ever encountered on screen.

4. Undefeatable

This is my pick for worst fight scene of all time. It has elements, that on their own, would make a fight scene cheesy, but together, they amalgamate themselves into the worst fight scene in history, they include, stupid slow-motion effects, weird facial expressions, pointless yelling, eye gouging, one of the stupidest deaths ever, and to top it all off, a cheesy one liner. And for some stupid reason, when they rip their shirts off they’re covered in baby oil.

3. Tough Guys Don’t Dance

What the hell was the director thinking when he thought that having the actor deliver a line like this would be a good idea? This definitely goes down as the most melodramatic line reading of all time and ruins the seriousness of the scene.

2. Troll 2

My pick for worst movie of all time, this flick is absolutely ridiculous. It’s about vegetarian goblins who eat humans, but can only do so by, get this, turning them into plants. Despite what we are lead to believe, there are actually no trolls in this movie, just midgets running around in burlap sacs and latex masks calling themselves goblins. The dialogue sounds like it was written by some one who uses English as their 2nd or 3rd language. And the acting is terrible, laugh out loud terrible.

This one scene perfectly shows how stupid this movie is.

1. Silent Night Deadly Night 2

This one, in my mind, is with out a doubt the most brutal scene I have ever had the misfortune of watching. The acting is terrible; the special effects are horrible. This movie has the worst car explosion I have ever seen, there is no way a car would ever explode like that and the actor who plays the cop needs to be shot, for real, what the hell kind of police man acts like that?

This scene does have one redeeming quality though, and that is when he randomly shoots the guy taking out the trash and yells the epically stupid one liner. That will forever be cemented as the dumbest line delivery in history.

I’ve heard in Japan (shout outs to Matt Brevner for telling me), they wear suits. I even heard stories of dudes that are actually rich in reality, but pose as a homeless person begging for change as a hobby. If you were born and raised in Vancouver BC, Canada, you’ll notice a growing trend. There’s more homeless people around then there ever was before! It’s not uncommon to see a panhandler on every single block in Downtown Vancouver. The trend that blows my mind the most, are the aggressive panhandlers. People that literally get in your face and ask you for money. Nothing pisses me off more then someone who gets right in your face and then expects you to do them a favor. I’m a pretty calm, cool, and collected guy, but if you do that to me, you’re asking to get your skull cracked! I have nothing against the homeless or panhandlers, they don’t bother me, unless they do something to piss me off. I mean I have actually quite a few stories and encounters with these people, but none like the experience I had a few days ago….

It was a beautiful June day. The sun was shining, not a cloud in sight. Everything was right. I had my girl by my side, I was chillin’ in the beach, I couldn’t ask for a more perfect, simple day in my opinion. To top it off, we decided to head on over to the McDonalds on Burrard street. If you’ve never been to that particular location, it’s a cesspool of a fast food restaurant. Not that I expect fast food places to be nice, but this is the worse location period. You got people left and right bothering you for change while you are eating. On even rarer occasions, you have people asking you for money while you are taking a piss or shit (I’ve had some guy look under the stall and ask me for money).

Anyway, back to my story, some guy comes to me and my girl while we are eating. He looked like a normal guy, Asian, probably in his mid-twenties. Looked like a nerdy kid, maybe he was a university student or something. He asked for money, but he clearly wasn’t a bum. I asked him, “what for, why do you need her money?” He said, “for food,” I just shook my head and rolled my eyes. A few seconds later he bothers another couple for money! I couldn’t believe it, we just gave him a few bucks, and he has the audacity to go and ask for more from some other people! I was pretty pissed to say the least, my girl wanted her money back. We walk out of the restaurant and for some reason I just have this sudden urge to confront him and give him shit. I’m normally not a confrontational person, but I couldn’t stand to see this guy, that is clearly not homeless. How many homeless people do you know with a cell phone or with a brand new G-Shock watch? When I saw him whip out his cell phone, I just lost it.

I go back into the McDonalds, I get in line with him where he is waiting to take his order, and I confront him:

Me: “You are not a bum and if you are you’re probably the most ballin’ bum I have ever met. Look at you with your cell phone, new Nike Cortez’, and G-Shock watch. Do you not feel any shame? My girlfriend gave you money so your skinny ass can eat.”

Him: “What are you talking about, no one gave me any money…”

Me: “You better give me your money back, before I kick your ass.”

Him: “I don’t know what you are talking about…”

As he said those words, my mind went blank, and all common sense just went out the door. I know the McDonalds on Burrard is one of the busiest locations in town and the place was packed too. I put my arm around his head and proceeded to put him in a headlock. He got out and as he was running I pushed him to the ground. Before I could start stomping the shit out of him, my dad (he works near by) out of nowhere comes out and tells me to stop, “it’s not worth it”. The old man actually saved me a lot of trouble. Imagine what could have happened to me. Assault charges? A new edition to my criminal record? I don’t want any of that, I already messed up plenty of opportunities in life because of a few mistakes.

What could have happened if I proceeded to kick some ass

My question to you readers, what would have you done? Is it ok to beat on a guy over $2? I want some feedback.

Greetings and salutations to one and all! For those that don’t know, I go by the name RCV. I’m one of the owners/operators of the online men’s lifestyle magazine classandgrime.com. Hyphen and Chiv are my long lost older cousins, and we’ve been following each other’s work for five years now (back when people were still blogging on Xanga). Anyways you had a little introduction about who I am, I want to tell you about where I come from…

When you think of Canada what do you think of? Maybe Hockey? Pamela Anderson? Steve Nash? In the Hip-Hop world when I say “Canada,” you probably say “Kardinal Offishall” or lately “Drake”. Those guys are cool, but they don’t exactly speak for Hip-Hop Canada, in my opinion. Dudes here from East to West have been grinding hard for as long as Hip-Hop has existed. I can go on and on about the Hip-Hop scene in our country as a whole, but I’m going to bore you. Instead, I’m gonna highlight one particular area and I’ll start with the Fresh Northwest aka. the Vancouver Hip-Hop scene…

To finish the rest of this visit post hiphopmanifesto.org.

As I was updating my iTunes, it dawned on me, “Holy shit, I have a lot of boy bands on this joint.” But realistically, kids, ever since I was old enough to <del datetime="2009-06-03T02:25:24+00:00">predict Lance Bass was a closet-homosexual</del> operate a stereo, I have noticed a sweeping trend in the music industry. That trend being that the music industry has slowly, but steadily, been kept alive by masses of pubescent girls with their daddy’s credit card purchasing the latest Jonas album and drooling over the latest Efron or Pattinson poster.

I can distinctly remember my dad buying my sister and I N*Sync’s debut album. At first I thought to myself, “Cool.” Of course I was five at the time, and I was impressionable, but no matter what age you may be, good music always finds a way into your soul. So there I was, in the basement of my landlord’s house, vibin’ along to Justin Timberlake’s squeaky-clean vocals and Max Martin’s impeccable production, with my dad’s Bruce Springsteen records keeping up the music credibility in my home. A year later, my sister (who happens to be one of those little girls that I’m talking about) purchased one of her first CD’s, Britney Spear’s debut …Baby One More Time. By then it was too late, and my sister was too vulnerable to avoid watching music videos. So, for the next 3 years or so of my childhood, I had to endure at least 1000 hours of “Bye, Bye, Bye”, “Dirty”, “Oops, I Did It Again”, and so on and so forth. The music industry was feasting off the profits of over-saturated boy bands, and self-proclaimed “virgins”.

Luckily, three years removed from that dark phase in my musical journey, I decided to inaugurate myself into the world that is Hip-Hop Music. Day in and day out, I did everything humanly possible to immerse myself in Hip-Hop culture. Be it countless hours of listening to Illmatic, reading up on the mid-90’s East Coast-West Coast rivalry, and even expanding my urban vocabulary. Nah mean, haha? There was also one other thing I was doing to keep up on the freshest shit on the steets, downloading music.

Yeah I’ve heard it all before, “Whats the big deal Kevin, you damn hypocrite.” Well the big deal, trick, is that, while downloading Asher’s latest album (Asleep In The Bread Aisle), for the sake of not feeling left out, is something I do not frown upon, it certainly hurts Asher’s dreams of makin’ that paper. Sure, these guys use $100 bills as Kleenex, but that does not mean they don’t deserve the success. It’s this “hipster mentality” that both hurt and help Hip-Hop, and subsequently, the music industry in it’s entirety. You’ve probably been bombarded with enough facts about the decline in record sales to publish a whole encyclopedia about it, so who am I to sound redundant. I just hope you can still look at yourself in the mirror when the Jonas Brothers are on top of the Billboard 100. Oh, too late…

Thanks to Disney, and its prepackaged group of stars, the recording industry can breathe for a second. In the summer of 2008, you could not turn on the radio, or go to the mall without hearing a group of young girls singing, “Burnin’ Up”. And not too long ago, High School Musical 3: Senior Year’s soundtrack managed to sell 297,000 copies in its the first week, coming in second to T.I. Lest we forget, Miley Cyrus and her soon-to-be-sexed-up image, has managed millions of albums sold, and a hit movie to boot. With P.Y.T.’s Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez creeping up the corner, I expect another good year or two for Disney revenues, more legions of screaming girls, and maybe just maybe, a healthy music industry.

“What team? Wildcats,”
